Christmas – Season of Giving or Just Shopping & Party?

One more day to Christmas… Have you finished your Christmas shopping? Attended loads of celebration parties? Packed your luggage to spend your Christmas and New Year out of town?

What does Christmas mean to you?

“Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child.”

“Christmas or Christmas Day (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning “Christ‘s Mass“) is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ,[7][8] observed most commonly on December 25[4][9][10] as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.[2][11][12] A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is prepared for by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night;[13] in some traditions, Christmastide includes an Octave.[14] Christmas Day is a public holiday in many of the world’s nations,[15][16][17] is celebrated culturally by a large number of non-Christian people,[1][18][19] and is an integral part of the holiday season, while some Christian groups reject the celebration. In several countries, celebrating Christmas Eve on December 24 has the main focus rather than December 25, with gift-giving and sharing a traditional meal with the family.”

So what does Christmas mean to you?

My love for Christmas started way back when I was very young at 9 years old. At the point of time, I was with the Salvation Army. My family background was not ideal then but I was well taken care of by them with just a token of $90 per month. My mom brought me to church weekly and Christmas was the time I felt so much love going around. I was involved in charity sales and going to hotels singing carols. To me, spreading the love through singing was also a part of giving. Music heals, gives strength, therapeutic and gives happiness to the soul. What are your favourite Christmas songs?
Christmas also meant walking along the closed roads of Orchard way back, enjoying the beautiful multi-coloured lights and decoration on the shopping centres , holding my parents hands and taking photos.
Christmas was a time of bonding with family and friends over simple home-cooked food, with Christmas tree and gift exchanges. Laughter, great conversations and appreciating the joy of coming together.
I was taken aback when I received several answers saying that Christmas meant nothing to them. Has the spirit of love and giving diminished through the years? If it did, I would think it’s sad though.

This year was fraught with loads of major challenges for me, from work to family and some disappointed friendships made when trust was misplaced. There were major breakthroughs, and yet also painful lessons learnt. I was even more determined to give back to people who need a part of me. To give back.

On 4th and 11th December, I involved my kids as usual to help in distributing food to the needy elderly at Jalan Bukit Merah with #apacketofrice. I had unknowingly been with them for 2 years and my kids started from the first world complaints of tired, thirst, hunger, smelly, cramp to being proactive in helping out whatever they could with no complaints now. They made me proud. To me, this is what Christmas spirit should be. To give unconditionally for people who needed most.

On 17th December, we were involved with S3 (Stroke Support Station) Christmas Party together with the S3 Goodwill pageant finalists. It was a meaningful event when we pooled together our resources to come up with a decent goody bag as well as perform and spent a wonderful half day with the stroke survivors.

Have you already planned what you would be doing this Christmas? I hope it would be a heartwarming season for you to spend time with your family, friends and love ones.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas!

“Christmas gift suggestions:

To your enemy, forgiveness.
To an opponent, tolerance.
To a friend, your heart.
To a customer, service.
To all, charity.
To every child, a good example.
To yourself, respect.”
